A Trip Back in Time
to Salzburg's Ancient Past
in the World's Most Exciting Mountain!

2,500 years ago, Celtic miners had already begun working these deposits. Archaeological finds, from pine torches to "the man in the salt", bear witness not only to Celtic mining but to their highly developed culture as well. Salt provided the financial basis for art and culture. Without the salt mined from Dürrnberg near Hallein, the opulence of Salzburg and its ruling sovereigns would have been unimaginable. Since the Middle Ages, the quantity of salt to be mined and its market price were set by the Archbishops of Salzburg, who also regulated the salt trade and its transport along the Salzach River. Today, at the spa community of Bad Dürrnberg, salt with its highly prized medicinal properties still plays an important role.
