THE HALLSTATT PERIOD


Entering the Hallstatt salt mine is simultaneously a journey in time back to the year 1,000 BC. Named after the richest location of prehistoric finds north of the Alps, the Early Iron Age (800 to 400 BC), was called the ‘Hallstatt Period’.

Beneath the meadows in the Salzberg Valley, an elevated valley in the mountains, can be found the Celtic burial grounds with around 2,000 graves from this period.

The centuries-long history of discoveries in the Salzberg and the Salzberg Valley are rich in significance. The existence of three totally independent prehistoric mines could be established from the numerous traces discovered.
