DISCOVER THE ROOTS OF SALZBURG
![]()
The salt mine on Dürrnberg Mountain near Hallein
is one of the oldest centers of alpine salt
production in the world. From the days of the Celts to the Salzburg
Archbishops, salt brought riches and prosperity.
A visit to the salt mine on the Dürrnberg is a journey to the time
when salt was still called "White Gold".
Dive into this mysterious underground world. Thunder with the mine car through the deepest tunnels and plummet on the polished parallel slides into the heart of the mountain. Glide on a mystical cloud of sound with a raft on the subterranean salt lake and hear the fascinating story of the "Man in the salt".
You can see the way in which the Celts once lived - in the reconstructed Celtic Village with the Count's Burial Mound close by the mine and the Celtic Study Trail on the Dürrnberg.
If you click here you get a
big (124K) picture of the Dürrnberg with the Salt Mines,
the cable
railway and the chair lift to the "Zinken" (1337m).
