MODERN AND ANCIENT CULTURE

Chapel dedicated to Saint Barbara

Modern and ancient culture go hand in hand at the Altaussee salt mine. A pilgrimage to the subterranean chapel dedicated to Saint Barbara is an age-old custom and the unique stage in the middle of the mine's underground salt lake is a frequent venue for theatrical performances, dramatic readings and other events.
The extraordinary atmosphere of this subterranean theater inspires artists and audience alike.

The hit play "Spiel im Berg," written especially for the Theater in the Aussee Mountain by Austrian dramatist Felix Mitterer and staged by international star Klaus Maria Brandauer, has been performed annually since 1992. The artistic adaptation of this natural setting - including its requisite elements of darkness, cold and silence - in perfect unison with the performance of the actors on stage and the fascinating musical accompaniment makes attending this play an unforgettable theatrical experience.

Special guided tours for school groups, featuring games, quizzes and other enjoyable learning activities, are a great favorite of students as well as teachers.
